The predominant religion is Christianity. The combination of the Roman Catholic Church with the religious traditions of African slaves and indigenous peoples led to the development of a diverse range of beliefs. Until recently, Catholicism was dominant, but in the 21st century there was a growth of secularism (no religious affiliation) and Protestantism.
